Ulcerative Colitis – Colons gone wild!

August 17, 2018

My wife, unfortunately, has been diagnosed with this terrible disease known as Ulcerative Colitis. UC fort short is a described as “A chronic, inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation in the digestive tract”. Just to keep it short and simple its basically ulcers in her large intestine. Symptoms for this disease include rectal bleeding, bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and pain.

Something is wrong here.

For about a year and a half my wife has been having slight issues going to the rest room. We always attributed her issues with what our local doctors thought it would be (by local doctors I mean our parents). “Dont worry! It’s just stress”, “Dont worry! It could be hemorrhoids”, “Dont Worry” , “Dont Worry”. At what point do we worry?

A few months after the soft stool, blood, pains, and general discomfort I recommended my wife go see a gastroenterologist. Basically a stomach doctor.  Now if you thought getting an appointment to a regular physician was tough this is tough times 100. Not only did it take months in order to see the specialist they tend to waste your first visit on garbage. After waiting 2 1/2 months to hopefully find a solution to the problem we were met with heart break. The machine, as the doctor put it, was damaged and there were no replacements available. How is it that in 2018 there is a medical machine can broken and broken for 2 months? Months passed and my wife learned to fight through the pain and discomfort and she put the follow up on the back burner.

2 Months prior to me posting this my wife was forced to schedule an appointment with her gastro by myself.  I was sleeping in our bed, and she woke up in the middle of the night as she normally does. This time around she had such a discharge that it actually woke me up. I dont know if I was mad that it woke me up, or that she never went back to the doctor. But I was mad! I called her mother without her noticing and I enlisted her in my evil plan to somehow sucker my wife into getting an appointment. A few phone calls later we were able to sucker my wife into getting further tests done.

1 Camera in the colon is worth 2 in the bush?

Leading up to the colonoscopy my wife had to undergo a rectal purge and clear out her system. She was given a laxative like solution which made her already soft stool even worse. Oh and you cannot eat or drink anything with a red tint to it. Sorry red jello but you’re out!

The actual procedure day consisted of visiting the outpatient center, getting put under, having the doctor stick things into her colon, and her waking up as if she were beat up. Upon coming to from her deep slumber she informed me that she was Diagnosed with UC. Along with the diagnosis she would also have to start a regimen of 8 daily pills ( 4 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon) as well as a daily enema. Maybe, just maybe, if this was caught earlier she might have not even needed to take any pills.

Colonoscopies – 2 for 1 specials all month long!

If you’re suffering from any of these symptoms, or any for that matter, please go get checked out. Being cheap and not spending the 50 – 70 dollars to see a specialist is just not worth a lifetime of sorrow. Granted, my wife does have to take 8 pills and do additional work but shes not dead. There are people in far worse positions than she is but nobody wants to take pills forever.
